Thanksgiving

I am so thankful today as I reflect on how blessed I am to be the teacher librarian at CHS! Last week I had the privilege to speak to the two AVID classes. I had a lot of fun thinking back to my high school years as I prepared my PowerPoint presentation. I was very grateful I still had my old high school yearbooks and had fun looking at all the photos and comments. Here's a few slides from my talk:

If you want to hear more of what I had to say, just ask me and don't forget to buy a yearbook.
You never know how you'll use those old photos in the future.

World Wide Web - Do you know what it first looked like?

Do you know what the very first page posted to the Web from the CERN lab in Switzerland in 1991 looked like? Take a peek and click the link below, you'll be surprised that some of the links still work!

This is a a list of subjects one could find on the Web in its very early days:

You can find information what the web looks like now in real time at:  http://www.internetlivestats.com/
We've come a long way, but I wonder what is next?

What is your favorite scary book?

Recently I asked some students what their favorite scary book was and I displayed their answers on the library window. I'm not much of a scary book reader, but I like to have some ideas on hand. So, if you want to read some scary books, here are a few suggestions from CHS folks:  The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (Emma Hall), The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe (Leslie Jurado), The Shining by Stephen King (Allie Mackey), How They Croaked by Georgia Bragg (Kim Holladay), Ten by Gretchen McNeil (Caroline Berglin),  Night of the Living Dummy by R.L. Stine (Lucas Shrader), The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner (Skylar Sand), This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel (Jonathan Mangus), The Ashes Trilogy by Ilsa J. Bick (Sam Miller), The Lockdown - Escape from the Furnace Series by Alexander Gordon Smith (Nik Dolph), Coraline by Neil Gaiman (MC Castaneda), Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi (Seth Meros).   Most of these books can be found at the CHS library, so come and check them out!

Great new book: An Ember in the Ashes by SabaaTahir

I just finished the BEST book and I highly recommend it. I hope author Sabaa Tahir has the sequel started because I can't wait for the next installment of the story. We have one copy here, but I bet I'll be buying more. Come in and check it out!

Visit the book's website

This is what YA author Marie Lu said about this book:

“I was so engrossed with this book that I missed a connecting flight. If that doesn't convince you to read An Ember in the Ashes, I don't know what will. An explosive, heartbreaking, epic debut that will keep you glued to the pages. I hope the world's ready for Sabaa Tahir.”- Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of Legend

Try a new search engine :infotrek!

I haven't tried a new search engine for a long time, but I recently learned about infotrek and seeing it makes me want to use it regularly. You might want to give it a try the next time you want to do some scholarly research. All the sources are vetted (looked at by a real person and recommended) and selected with high school students in mind. I don't think you'll get so many junk results when you search and your teachers will appreciate your reliable, quality resources!

Welcome - it's a brand new school year!

Welcome back! I hope the 2015-2016 school year will be a great one. I was a little busy this summer moving books. Come in and see the changes!

I actually moved all the reference books and non-fiction books to a new section this summer. I hope you like the changes
The fiction books are now spread out where the non-fiction used to be.
The fiction section has lots of room and space for displays.

APRIL IS POETRY MONTH!

See poster @ CHS Library

Did you know April is National Poetry Month?

You can help celebrate by reading poetry. Consider this:

“When you live in a rapidly moving swirl, you can only view your surroundings with a glance. Poetry requires us to slow down, to take time to pause. ”
—Naomi Shihab Nye, Academy of American Poets Chancellor

Take some time this month to read, write, listen to, and experience some poetry. You can receive a "Poem-A-Day" by signing up at poets.org. Click here to browse all 2650 poets and 5851 poems on the poets.org website

We also have a great selection of poetry books at the CHS Library.

Top reasons to use databases | Piktochart Infographic Editor

I subscribe to a list-serve of librarians from all over the world. One of my favorite contributors is Joyce Valenza, a professor at Rutgers University and formally a high school librarian. She shared this and I'm sharing it with you. It's a great reminder of why we want students to use our subscription databases like ProQuest, CultureGrams, eLibrary, Opposing Viewpoints and more. Take a moment, click on the link and see the "Top reasons to use databases!"

Copyright and Fair Use

Mr. Kert asked me to come into his Web Design class to share about Copyright and Fair use and I decided it would be a good topic for my blog. If you haven't thought about copyright for awhile, it might be a good time for a little refresher course!
In the Seattle Times, there was an article about the Seattle Seahawks not blocking a trademark request concerning the term "District 12" filed on behalf of "Hunger Games" author Suzanne Collins.  The copyright issue is alive and well today and something the Seahawks defend - ask someone who tries to copy their famous logo and sell it.

According to Common Sense Media there are several key terms you need to know:
fair use: the ability to use a small amount of someone’s creative work without permission, but only in certain ways
commercial purposes: a use in connection with a business, usually for profit
copyright: a law that protects a creator’s ownership of and control over the work he or she creates, requiring other people to get the creator’s permission before they copy, share, or perform that work
Creative Commons: a kind of copyright that makes it easy for people to copy, share, and build on someone’s creative work – as long as they give the creator credit for it
public domain: creative work that’s not protected by copyright and is therefore free for one to use however one wants
